Editing can sometimes get in the way of our love for shooting and the creative process of being a photographer.
After photographing more than 700 weddings, I know exactly what it feels like to arrive home with thousands of RAW files waiting for me. The wedding may have been absolutely incredible, but there is still a mountain of work between capturing those moments and delivering the final story.
That is why Narrative has become one of the tools I genuinely do not want to work without.
This is my honest Narrative Select review and a look at why I love using Narrative to cull and edit my wedding photography. It helps me move through thousands of images faster, make more confident selections, and arrive in Lightroom with a beautifully consistent starting point.
Most importantly, it saves me time without taking away the creative decisions that make the work mine.

What Is Narrative Select and Edit?
You may know the software as Narrative Select, Narrative Edit or Narrative Select and Edit.
The product is now simply called Narrative, but many photographers still use the earlier names. It brings AI-assisted photo culling and AI editing together in one app, creating a much smoother journey from importing a wedding to starting the final edits in Lightroom.
Narrative Select helps you review, compare, and select your photographs. Narrative Edit helps you apply an intelligent starting edit before those photographs arrive in Lightroom.
It is not there to replace the photographer. It is there to remove loads of repetitive work and help you make decisions faster.
My Honest Narrative Select Review
What I love most about Narrative is that it feels as though it was designed by people who understand the reality of working through a large wedding gallery.
I do not need software to tell me which moment matters emotionally. I need software that helps me see my options quickly, compare similar frames, and identify technical problems without constantly zooming in and second-guessing myself.
Narrative does exactly that.
Thousands of RAW Files Load Incredibly Quickly
One of the first things you notice is the speed.
Narrative can import thousands of RAW files in seconds, allowing you to start reviewing a wedding without waiting for endless previews to load. Images move quickly as you work through them, which keeps the process flowing.
That may sound like a small thing until you have spent hours waiting for large wedding files to render while trying to maintain some kind of rhythm.
When the software keeps up with you, culling immediately feels lighter.

Scenes View Makes Comparing Photographs Easier
Wedding photographers often take several frames of the same moment.
Think about confetti, a couple walking down the aisle, family photographs, speeches, hugs, reactions, or a dance floor absolutely losing its mind. There may be ten or twenty photographs from one scene, with tiny differences between them.
Narrative groups similar photographs together in Scenes View and helps surface the strongest technical options. Instead of treating every frame as a completely separate decision, I can compare the scene and choose the image that tells the story best.
This is especially useful when working through a large or multi-day wedding celebration, where the number of photographs can build up incredibly quickly.
Eye and Focus Assessments Remove So Much Guesswork
We have all experienced it.
You capture a brilliant group photograph, but one person blinked. Or the expression is perfect, but the focus is slightly off. Without assistance, checking every face means repeatedly zooming in, moving around the frame, and comparing almost identical photographs.
Narrative’s eye and focus assessments help identify possible closed eyes and focus problems. This makes it easier to narrow down the strongest frames without inspecting every photograph from scratch.
The software gives me useful technical information. I still make the final decision.
The Close Ups Panel Is Brilliant for Group Photographs
The Close Ups panel allows you to see the important faces in a photograph without constantly zooming and panning around the full image.
For wedding group photographs, this is an absolute lifesaver.
I can compare expressions, check whether everyone looks sharp, and see if someone blinked without losing my place in the selection. It removes loads of repetitive clicking and helps me feel more confident that I have chosen the strongest frame.
Narrative Helps Without Taking Away My Creative Control
This is probably the most important part of my Narrative Select review.
Wedding photography is not only about technical perfection.
A slightly imperfect frame can still hold the most important emotion. A photograph with movement, grain or unusual focus may carry far more meaning than the technically perfect image beside it.
Narrative understands focus, eye state, similarity, and image quality. It does not understand my couple, their people, or how the wedding felt.
That part still belongs to me.
I decide which photographs form the final story. Narrative simply gives me better information and a faster way to move through the options.
For a documentary wedding photographer, that balance is incredibly important. I do not want to hand my creative judgement over to software. I want a tool that makes the technical part faster so I can give more attention to the photographs that matter.
How Narrative Fits Into My Wedding Photography Workflow
My workflow is simple:
I import the wedding RAW files into Narrative.
Narrative groups similar photographs into scenes.
I use the eye, focus, and image assessments to compare my options.
I make the final selections based on technical quality, emotion, and how the photographs work together as a story.
I apply my Personal AI Preset.
I send the selected photographs directly to Lightroom.
I add the final creative refinements before delivering the gallery.
Narrative does the heavy lifting without removing me from the process.
The result is a much smoother journey from thousands of RAW files to a carefully selected and consistent wedding gallery.
Why I Love Narrative Edit and Personal AI Presets
A standard Lightroom preset applies the same starting settings to every image.
The challenge is that a wedding day can move through completely different conditions. You may begin in a dark hotel room, move into bright midday sunlight, photograph a ceremony under trees, capture portraits at golden hour, and finish on a dance floor filled with coloured lights.
One fixed preset cannot understand every one of those situations.
A Narrative Personal AI Preset learns from the way I have edited my previous work. It applies my style while adapting the starting settings to the individual photograph.
That means I can arrive in Lightroom with a gallery that already feels far more consistent.
I am not beginning every image from scratch or repeatedly correcting the same exposure and white balance problems. I can focus on the smaller creative decisions, skin tones, mood and final touches that make the photographs feel like mine.
Narrative continues learning from the adjustments made to the photographs, which means the Personal AI Preset can become more accurate as it is used.
This does not replace my editing style. It helps me reach it faster.
The Biggest Benefits for Me
Narrative has improved my workflow in several important ways:
I can begin reviewing a wedding almost immediately.
Similar photographs are easier to compare.
Focus and closed eye problems are quicker to spot.
Group photographs take less time to check.
I remain in control of every final selection.
My images arrive in Lightroom with a more consistent starting edit.
I spend less time on repetitive adjustments.
I have more energy for the creative part of the work.
I can move towards delivering the final gallery more efficiently.
The greatest benefit is not simply speed.
It is the time and mental space that Narrative gives back.
Less time stuck behind the computer means more time shooting, creating, running my business, and being present with the people I love.
What Narrative Does Not Replace
Narrative is a powerful tool, but it does not replace the photographer.
It does not replace:
Your understanding of the couple and their people
Your instinct for emotion
Your ability to recognise an important moment
Your personal editing taste
Your final Lightroom refinements
Your responsibility to tell the complete story
The software can show me which frame is technically stronger. It cannot always tell me which frame will make someone feel something in twenty or fifty years.
That is still my job, and I would never want to give that away.
Is Narrative Worth It for Wedding Photographers?
If you photograph the occasional session and genuinely enjoy working through every image manually, Narrative may not feel essential.
If you regularly return from weddings with thousands of photographs, the time saved across an entire season can become incredibly valuable.
For me, Narrative is absolutely worth it.
It helps me cull faster, edit more consistently, and protect the part of my energy that I want to spend on storytelling and creativity.
You do not have to take my word for it. Put one complete wedding through the free trial and experience the difference in your own workflow.
That is honestly all it will take.

Narrative Select Frequently Asked Questions
What is Narrative Select?
Narrative Select is the earlier name for Narrative’s AI-assisted photo culling software. It helps photographers review, compare, and select images faster using features such as Scenes View, eye and focus assessments, and the Close Ups panel.
Does Narrative Replace Lightroom?
No. Narrative works alongside Lightroom.
I use Narrative to cull the photographs and apply a Personal AI Preset. The selected images are then sent to Lightroom for my final creative refinements, detailed adjustments, and delivery preparation.
Does Narrative Automatically Choose My Photographs?
Narrative is AI-assisted rather than completely automated.
It groups similar images, assesses technical information, and helps surface stronger options. The photographer still makes the final selections and remains in control of the story.
Can Narrative Work With RAW Photographs?
Yes. Narrative is designed to import and review large numbers of RAW files quickly, making it particularly useful for wedding, event and portrait photographers.
What Is a Personal AI Preset?
A Personal AI Preset is trained using your consistently edited photographs. It learns how you approach exposure, colour, white balance and other adjustments, then applies an adaptive starting edit to new images.
Unlike a standard preset, it can respond differently to different lighting conditions while working towards a consistent style.
Can I Try Narrative for Free?
Yes. Narrative currently offers a free trial, allowing you to test its culling and editing features on your own photographs before choosing a paid plan.
Is Narrative Good for Wedding Photographers?
Narrative is especially useful for wedding photographers because we often work with thousands of images captured in constantly changing light.
Its combination of fast RAW importing, scene grouping, face assessments, AI-assisted culling, and Personal AI Presets can make the full post-production workflow much more efficient.
Less Time Editing. More Time Creating.
