The LEKKER-ness of Fabio and Nadia’s Rooftop on Bree wedding is difficult to squeeze into only a few frames.
This celebration had everything I love about photographing weddings. Tears of joy. Bursts of laughter. People hugging, cheering, vibing and eventually giving everything they had on the dance floor.
It was emotional, stylish, full of personality and completely alive.
That is the magic I am always looking for behind the camera. Not only the moments everyone expects to see, but the real reactions happening around them. The quick glance between two people. A parent trying to hold back tears. Friends laughing until they can barely breathe. Guests forgetting about the camera and becoming completely absorbed in the celebration.
Those are the photographs that take you back to how your wedding actually felt.
A Cape Town City Wedding From De Waterkant to Bree Street
Fabio and Nadia’s wedding story moved through three distinctive parts of Cape Town.
Nadia stayed and prepared at The Capital Mirage in De Waterkant, surrounded by the energy and architecture of the city. The wedding ceremony was held at the Church Studio at Roodebloem Studios in Woodstock before everyone made their way into the Cape Town CBD for the reception.
The contrast between these locations gave the day such a strong city-wedding identity. The Capital Mirage brought contemporary Cape Town style, the Roodebloem Church Studio gave the ceremony a sense of history and atmosphere, and Rooftop on Bree opened everything up to the skyline.
It felt connected to Cape Town from beginning to end.
A Ceremony Filled With Real Emotion
Fabio and Nadia’s ceremony was about more than the formalities of getting married.
There were real nerves, real joy, and those wonderfully unguarded reactions that cannot be planned. These are often the moments that become the heart of a wedding story. The couple may be standing at the front, but the story is unfolding everywhere.
It is happening in the faces of parents, siblings, and friends. It is in the hands reaching for one another, the laughter that suddenly breaks the tension, and the tears that arrive without warning.
This is why I love documentary wedding photography. I can guide a portrait when guidance is needed, but during moments like these, my job is to pay attention and allow people to be fully present.
Rooftop on Bree Wedding Reception
After the ceremony, the celebration continued at Rooftop on Bree, right in the centre of Cape Town.
The venue combines an indoor event space with a rooftop deck, panoramic city views, a retractable skylight and an impressive built-in bar. It gives couples the freedom to create something polished and stylish while still keeping the atmosphere social and relaxed.
For Fabio and Nadia, it became the backdrop to a celebration filled with florals, good food, live music and a proper party.
The Grand Botanist brought the décor and floral vision to life, while Grand Room Design supplied the furniture that completed the reception setting.
The result was stylish without taking attention away from what mattered most: the people.
The People Made the Wedding
Beautiful details are wonderful to photograph, but they only become meaningful once people enter the space.
Fabio and Nadia’s guests brought so much energy to their Rooftop on Bree wedding. There was laughter during the speeches, emotion between loved ones, and a feeling that everyone had arrived ready to celebrate them properly.
Not simply to attend a wedding, but to be part of it.
This is something I will always believe: your guests are not background characters in your wedding story. They are part of the reason the day matters. They are the people who shaped you, supported you and travelled through life with you. When they fill a room with love and energy, the photographs become about far more than what the wedding looked like.
They show how it felt to be there.
From Predrinks to a Packed Dance Floor
Sarah-Jane Thomas set the mood during predrinks, bringing live music into the city atmosphere before the reception moved into full celebration mode.
Later, Dario from Modern Man Music took over and the dance floor came alive.
With lighting and the dance floor supplied by In and Out Events, the reception shifted from an elegant rooftop dinner into a proper Cape Town party.
This is where the polished parts of a wedding give way to beautiful chaos. Shoes come off. Jackets disappear. Friends pull one another onto the dance floor. People stop caring how they look and simply experience the night.
For a documentary wedding photographer, it does not get much better than that.
Documentary Wedding Photography With Heart
Fabio and Nadia’s wedding reminded me again why I absolutely love being behind the camera.
I want couples to receive photographs that show the beautiful details and portraits, but I also want them to see the parts they may have missed. The tears. The belly laughs. The people losing themselves in the music. The small moments happening just beyond their view.
Years from now, I hope these photographs help Fabio and Nadia remember the noise, the joy, the city lights and the people who filled their wedding with so much life.
